What looked like an innocent walk down a dirt road in Australia nearly turned into a deadly wildlife encounter.
A brother and sister were skipping hand in hand along a trail in northeast Victoria completely unaware that a highly venomous eastern brown snake was lying directly in their path.
Even their mother, walking just behind them, did not notice the reptile hidden beside the road.
Just inches from disaster
At one point, the young boy stepped only inches away from the snake without realizing it.
The eastern brown snake is considered one of Australia’s deadliest snakes and is responsible for more human fatalities in the country than any other species.
Despite the close call, the snake remained perfectly still as the children and their mother walked past safely.
The danger was discovered later
The frightening reality of the encounter only became clear afterward.
While reviewing photos from the outing, the mother suddenly noticed the snake hidden near the children’s feet and realized how close they had come to tragedy.
The incident originally happened in Eskdale, Victoria, in 2019, but the images resurfaced recently as a warning about how difficult snakes can be to spot in the wild.

“Snakes don’t attack people,” he said. “The snake’s always defending itself.”

Wildlife experts recommend staying alert while walking through bushland or grassy areas, especially during warmer months when snakes are more active.
Wearing long pants and proper footwear can provide extra protection, while teaching children to pay attention to their surroundings can also help reduce risk.
