Large ears can perform very different jobs. Some release body heat, while others detect insects underground, locate prey in darkness or help animals communicate.
There is also more than one way to define “biggest.” African elephants have the largest ears in absolute size, while the long-eared jerboa has the largest ears relative to its body.
Long-Eared Jerboa

The long-eared jerboa is the standout when ear size is compared with body length. Its ears can measure roughly two-thirds the length of its body. The small desert rodent lives in China and Mongolia and uses highly sensitive hearing to detect insects while moving through dry habitat at night.
African Elephant

African elephants possess the largest ears of any living animal. The broad surfaces contain extensive networks of blood vessels, allowing heat to move from warm blood into the surrounding air. Flapping the ears increases airflow, making them important temperature-control structures as well as communication tools.
Fennec Fox

The fennec is the smallest fox but has the largest ears relative to body size among canids. Its oversized ears help release body heat in the Sahara and other arid regions. They also allow the fox to detect small prey moving beneath sand while hunting after dark.
Bat-Eared Fox

Bat-eared foxes are named for the enormous ears that dominate their narrow faces. The animals feed heavily on insects, including termites, and sensitive hearing helps them locate prey moving through grass or soil. Their ears also provide extra surface area for releasing heat in warm African environments.
Spotted Bat

The spotted bat has some of the largest ears relative to body size among North American bats. Its pale pink ears are impossible to miss when the animal is at rest. Like other echolocating bats, it combines sensitive hearing with ultrasonic calls to navigate and capture flying insects at night.
Black-Tailed Jackrabbit

Black-tailed jackrabbits have extremely long ears that help them detect approaching coyotes, birds of prey and other dangers. Blood vessels near the ear surface also allow excess body heat to escape. This combination is particularly valuable in the hot, exposed landscapes where jackrabbits spend much of their lives.
Caracal

The caracal’s ears are famous not only for their size but for the long black tufts extending from their tips. Its hearing helps locate rodents, birds and other prey, including animals hidden by vegetation. Scientists have proposed several functions for the tufts, but their exact purpose remains uncertain.
Different Ears Solve Different Problems

Large ears are not simply decorative. In deserts they can help dump heat; in predators they improve prey detection; in prey animals they provide early warning. The same basic structure has therefore been exaggerated by evolution for very different survival problems in elephants, foxes, bats, rodents and cats.
