Homesickness and the desire for familiar wildlife influenced some nineteenth-century introductions, but the original claim is too broad. Settlers also moved animals for hunting, pest control, food, and cultural projects intended to reshape unfamiliar landscapes.
European rabbits and red foxes transformed parts of Australia, while European starlings and house sparrows spread across North America. Their histories show how a small intentional release can create ecological problems lasting for generations.
Acclimatization Changed Ecosystems

Acclimatization societies tried to establish useful or familiar plants and animals in colonies and new settlements. Most attempts failed, but successful introductions sometimes expanded rapidly because predators, diseases, competitors, and climates differed from those in the species’ original range.
Rabbits Came for Sport

European rabbits arrived with early settlers, but the release that drove Australia’s invasion occurred in Victoria in 1859. Thomas Austin released 13 wild rabbits on his estate for hunting. Contemporary educational records also describe food, sport, and a reminder of home as motives for keeping familiar animals.
Rabbits Strip the Land

Rabbits consume seedlings, grasses, and other vegetation, prevent plant regeneration, compete with native herbivores, and expose soil to erosion. Australia’s State of the Environment report identifies the European rabbit as a threat to 322 nationally listed species, equal to 21 percent of those assessed.
Foxes Came for Hunting

European red foxes were deliberately introduced to Australia for recreational hunting in 1855, and wild populations became established by the early 1870s. Within a century, foxes had spread across most of the continent, aided by adaptable diets and suitable agricultural landscapes.
Foxes Hit Native Wildlife

Fox predation has contributed to declines in ground-nesting birds, reptiles, and small to medium-sized mammals, including the greater bilby. The Australian government treats fox predation as a key threatening process. Control can help vulnerable wildlife, but it must be sustained over large areas.
Starlings Followed Shakespeare

In 1890, about 80 European starlings were released in New York’s Central Park during an effort associated with introducing birds mentioned by Shakespeare. The population spread across the continent. Genetic research suggests rapid adaptation to different temperatures and rainfall helped the birds succeed in varied environments.
Starlings Took Nest Cavities

European starlings compete strongly for holes used by native cavity-nesting birds and may expel occupants. Large flocks also create problems for agriculture, property, and aviation. These impacts explain why wildlife agencies manage starlings even though the birds themselves are responding naturally to an opportunity humans created.
House Sparrows Spread West

House sparrows were introduced in Brooklyn in 1851, partly in hopes that they would control insect pests. By 1900, they had reached the Rocky Mountains, with additional western releases helping their spread. They compete with native birds for nest cavities and now live around buildings across most of North America.
Prevention Comes First

Once an adaptable introduced animal becomes widespread, complete removal may be impossible or extremely expensive. Modern biosecurity therefore focuses on preventing releases, detecting new populations early, and responding before they spread. The lesson is not that the animals are malicious, but that moving species can remake ecosystems.
