Eight Animals With Remarkably Long Pregnancies

Pregnancy length varies enormously across the animal kingdom. Even defining “gestation” becomes complicated outside mammals because some live-bearing reptiles, fishes, amphibians, and invertebrates retain developing young in very different ways.

These examples include some of the longest documented or estimated periods. Exact durations can vary by individual and species, and some unusual records remain estimates rather than precisely observed pregnancies.

Frilled Shark

The frilled shark may have one of the longest gestation periods known among vertebrates, although the exact duration remains uncertain. Estimates suggest embryos could develop inside the female for as long as about three and a half years.

That figure is partly an inference from the species’ exceptionally slow embryonic development rather than thousands of pregnancies observed from mating to birth. Frilled sharks inhabit deep water and are rarely observed alive for extended periods, making reproductive research difficult. Females eventually give birth to live young whose embryos developed using yolk inside the mother.

Alpine Salamander

The black alpine salamander gives birth to fully developed young instead of laying exposed eggs. Its pregnancy length changes with elevation and environmental conditions in the European Alps.

IFAW summarizes evidence showing gestation around two years at lower alpine elevations and potentially up to three years at higher sites. Cold temperatures slow development considerably. Usually only one or two young survive to birth, after a remarkable developmental process in which embryos obtain nutrition inside the mother before emerging as miniature terrestrial salamanders.

African Elephant

African elephants have the longest established gestation among living mammals, lasting approximately 22 months. Asian elephant pregnancies can also approach that duration, commonly ranging from about 18 to 22 months.

The long pregnancy produces a highly developed calf weighing roughly 100 kilograms at birth. Newborn elephants still depend heavily on their mothers and herd, but they must quickly stand, walk, nurse, and follow moving family members. An elephant’s slow reproductive rate also means the loss of breeding females can have long-lasting consequences for recovering populations.

Rhinoceros

Rhinos also spend well over a year carrying each calf. Depending on species and individual, pregnancy commonly lasts roughly 15 to 18 months, with females normally producing one calf at a time.

That slow reproductive schedule matters enormously for conservation. Rhino populations damaged by poaching cannot rapidly replace mature animals because females invest so much time in each offspring and calves remain with their mothers for years. Even where anti-poaching measures succeed, population recovery can therefore be much slower than people might expect from simple birth counts.

Killer Whale

Killer whales, or orcas, carry a single calf for roughly 17 months. That makes their pregnancy substantially longer than the human nine-month average and reflects the extended development typical of many large marine mammals.

Birth is followed by another long investment. Calves nurse and learn within complex social groups, while some killer whale populations maintain lifelong associations between offspring and their mothers. Females produce relatively few calves across their reproductive lives, meaning survival of adult females can have an outsized influence on small or endangered populations.

Walrus

Walrus reproduction includes delayed implantation. After fertilization, embryo development does not immediately proceed in the same way as a continuously growing pregnancy, extending the total reproductive period to roughly 15 or 16 months.

The resulting calf is born into one of Earth’s harshest environments. Mothers nurse and protect young over an extended period, and calves may remain with them for several years. This substantial investment helps explain why walrus reproduction is slow compared with animals that produce large numbers of offspring every breeding season.

Sperm Whale

Female sperm whales carry calves for roughly 14 to 16 months. The species has the largest brain of any living animal and produces a single dependent calf rather than a litter of young.

Pregnancy is only the beginning of maternal investment. NOAA information summarized by IFAW indicates that calves rely on milk before gradually adding solid food, while nursing may continue for years. Females reproduce slowly, so population recovery following the enormous losses caused by historical commercial whaling can take many generations.

Giraffe

A giraffe pregnancy lasts about 15 months. By the end, the developing calf has reached remarkable proportions and is already equipped with long limbs needed for rapid movement soon after birth.

Giraffes normally give birth while standing. The calf drops to the ground, then attempts to stand relatively quickly because mobility matters in African habitats shared with large predators. This long prenatal development gives the newborn a major head start, although calves remain vulnerable and continue depending on maternal protection and milk after birth.
