Dutton Ranch Filming Hit by Rattlesnake Surprises in Texas

JakeJune 1, 2026

Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” spin-off “Dutton Ranch” brought its cast into a setting that proved as dangerous in real life as it looks on screen. Filmed in Texas, the production reportedly dealt with an unusually high number of rattlesnakes across multiple shooting locations.

The series was shot across rural parts of Texas, where cast and crew quickly discovered that rattlesnakes were far more common than expected. Some filming areas had to be reassessed after snakes were spotted close to planned shoot zones.

What was meant to be a rugged Western backdrop also turned into a real safety concern for production teams working outdoors.

Cole Hauser shared that filming involved frequent encounters with rattlesnakes over an extended production period. He estimated that crews captured or relocated large numbers of snakes while working across different locations.

According to Hauser, some areas were so heavily populated that production schedules had to be adjusted to avoid nighttime risks.

One specific filming site reportedly had so many rattlesnakes that production had to cancel or delay planned shoots there. Crews discovered dozens of snakes before cameras could even roll.

The situation highlighted how unpredictable natural environments can be when filming in remote regions without controlled sets.

To manage the risk, production brought in trained snake wranglers whose job was to locate and safely remove rattlesnakes from filming areas. These specialists worked ahead of filming to clear paths and reduce danger for cast and crew.

Their presence became a constant part of the production process in outdoor scenes.

Kelly Reilly described filming in conditions where she had to remain highly alert while moving through grasslands and uneven terrain. Even with safety teams in place, she said there was always awareness of what might be nearby.

She noted that scenes often required trust that wranglers had already cleared the area before filming began.

Safety Measures Helped Keep Production Running

Despite the constant presence of rattlesnakes, the production continued thanks to strict safety protocols and experienced wildlife handlers. Crew members were trained to respond quickly if snakes were spotted during shoots.

These measures allowed filming to continue while minimizing risks to everyone on set.

The presence of rattlesnakes on set added a layer of realism to the already rugged tone of the “Yellowstone” franchise. The series is known for incorporating harsh natural environments, and this production experience reflected that world in real life.

For cast and crew, it was a reminder that the dangers of the American frontier are not always fictional.
