A family spearfishing trip off the coast of Western Australia ended in tragedy after a 35-year-old man died following a suspected shark attack near Michaelmas Island, close to Albany. The incident has renewed concerns about shark encounters in one of Australia’s most active marine regions while authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Attack Occurred Near Michaelmas Island

The incident happened on Saturday morning near Michaelmas Island, a popular coastal area located off Albany, approximately 375 kilometers southeast of Perth. The man was reportedly in the water spearfishing with family members when the attack occurred.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before midday after reports of a possible shark attack in the area.
Rescue Efforts Lasted More Than Two Hours

After the attack, the injured diver was brought back to shore by boat, where paramedics immediately began treatment. Multiple emergency crews responded to the scene and worked for more than two hours in an attempt to save his life.
Despite extensive efforts by medical personnel, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities Suspect a Large Shark

According to Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the attack is believed to have involved a shark measuring approximately 4.5 meters in length.
Officials have not yet confirmed the species involved, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
Warnings Issued for Local Waters

Following the attack, authorities urged residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution in waters around Michaelmas Island and nearby coastal areas.
Officials advised the public to follow any beach closures or safety warnings issued by local park rangers and surf lifesaving organizations while response teams assess the situation.
Albany’s Waters Are Known for Marine Wildlife

The waters around Albany are home to a rich variety of marine species, including seals, dolphins, whales, and several shark species. The region’s productive marine ecosystem attracts both wildlife enthusiasts and recreational fishers throughout the year.
While shark attacks remain relatively rare, encounters can occur in areas where large predators naturally hunt and travel.
Investigation Now Underway

Western Australia Police have confirmed that a report will be prepared for the coroner as part of the standard investigation process. Authorities are also working alongside fisheries and wildlife officials to gather information about the incident.
As the investigation continues, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks associated with ocean activities and the importance of remaining vigilant in waters inhabited by large marine predators.
