A widely shared 2024 video showed a cobra confronting a mongoose on the runway at Patna Airport in India. Two additional mongooses later entered the encounter and surrounded the snake.
The cobra did not literally “realise” it had chosen incorrectly. The footage showed a defensive struggle between animals equipped with very different weapons, and its final outcome was not clearly recorded.
A Runway Standoff

The encounter occurred at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna. Video showed the cobra holding its position as one mongoose moved around it. The open runway offered little cover, placing both animals in an exposed and unusually human-altered environment.
The Cobra Raises Its Hood

A cobra spreads its hood to appear larger and warn an approaching threat. It may also raise the front of its body and strike rapidly. The display is defensive communication, giving an opponent an opportunity to retreat before the snake risks a close physical fight.
The Mongoose Stays Mobile

The mongoose repeatedly moved around the cobra rather than remaining directly in front of its fangs. Quick changes in direction can force the snake to turn, strike, and reset. Avoiding the initial bite is essential because venom resistance does not make a mongoose impossible to kill.
Two More Mongooses Arrive

The balance changed when two additional mongooses entered the scene. They approached from different directions, making it harder for the cobra to watch every threat. Group involvement may protect a social companion, drive away danger, or create an opportunity to attack.
Speed Provides an Advantage

Mongooses possess rapid reflexes and flexible bodies that help them evade strikes. They often watch the snake’s head and react as it begins moving. A successful mongoose attack commonly targets the head or neck, where a bite can prevent another venomous strike.
Venom Resistance Helps

Research has identified changes in mongoose nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which are targeted by cobra alpha-neurotoxins. These molecular differences reduce the toxin’s ability to bind effectively and cause paralysis, providing the mongoose with greater resistance than many other mammals.
Resistance Is Not Immunity

A mongoose can still be injured or killed by a cobra. A deep bite, a large venom dose, poor positioning, exhaustion, or injury can overcome its defences. Its advantage comes from combining partial biochemical resistance with speed, thick fur, experience, and precise attacks.
The Ending Is Unclear

The available airport footage did not clearly establish which animal ultimately survived or left the area. Reports describing an instant victory go beyond what the video proves. The most accurate conclusion is that reinforcements placed the cobra in a far more difficult defensive position.
