Barro Colorado Island sits in the Panama Canal and has been a biological reserve for more than a century. Two Eagles

The research centered on two radio-tagged captive-bred harpy eagles. A male was released on Barro Colorado in June 1999 at 19 months old, followed by a female in October at 20 months. Both already had some free-flying hunting experience before the island phase, so it is misleading to imply that their first kill happened the instant they arrived. Radio tags allowed researchers to locate the birds, follow daily movements, record predation attempts, calculate capture success, and examine how prey animals responded to their return.

The famous number 65 came from an earlier census of mantled howler monkeys on Barro Colorado. That survey indicated about 65 troops, each averaging roughly 19 individuals. It did not mean researchers lined up 65 troops and exposed all of them to two eagles at once. The number described the island’s broader howler population structure. Later experiments sampled groups within that population to test whether monkeys exposed to the reintroduced harpies had developed a specific response to the predators’ calls compared with a nearby control population.
Howler Prey

Harpy eagles are specialized hunters of arboreal mammals, and howler monkeys can be part of their diet. The released birds also captured sloths and other prey, so the experiment was not a simple two-eagles-versus-monkeys contest. The 2002 foraging study found differences between the male and female in prey choice and hunting patterns. The female had a higher observed capture success than the male, although the difference was not statistically significant. The study’s value came from detailed records of real hunting behavior rather than a single dramatic kill count.
Hunting Success

Researchers calculated observed capture success at about 38 percent for the male and 49 percent for the female during documented predation attempts. The island howlers responded specifically to the predator calls rather than reacting equally to ordinary bird sounds. That result suggested the monkeys had learned to identify the renewed danger through acoustic cues alone.
Rapid Learning

The most remarkable result was how quickly the howlers acquired an appropriate anti-predator response. Harpy eagles had been absent for many decades, yet the monkeys developed a specific response within less than a year of renewed exposure. They also retained that response for months after the eagles were removed. This showed that anti-predator behavior did not have to reappear through slow genetic change across generations. Individual experience and social learning could rapidly restore a useful defense when a previously missing predator returned to the ecosystem.
Reintroduction Lesson

The Barro Colorado study became important beyond harpy eagles and howler monkeys because it showed how predator reintroductions can reshape behavior as well as mortality. Researchers argued that conservation programs should consider how prey species recognize and respond to a returning predator, particularly when that predator has been absent for generations. The study does not support a simple story of two eagles devastating 65 monkey troops.
