Rome Zoo Serves Frozen Treats to Help Animals Beat Italy’s Extreme Heatwave

JakeJune 29, 2026June 29, 2026

As a severe heatwave grips Italy, animals at Rome’s Bioparco Zoo are receiving frozen meals, chilled pools, and climate-controlled shelters to stay safe in soaring temperatures. With forecasts predicting highs of up to 37°C in the Italian capital, zoo staff have introduced a range of cooling measures to protect both land and aquatic species while encouraging natural behaviours.

On June 26, giraffes, hippos, tapirs, capybaras, lemurs, and seals were treated to frozen fruit, vegetables, fish, and specially prepared ice snacks.

The icy treats not only help lower the animals’ body temperatures but also encourage foraging and exploration, providing valuable environmental enrichment during the hottest days of summer.

In addition to frozen food, Bioparco staff are carefully managing habitats for animals that struggle in extreme heat.

Cooled pools, shaded enclosures, and air-conditioned indoor spaces are being used to protect heat-sensitive species, particularly amphibious animals that rely on stable temperatures to remain healthy.

Among the zoo’s most vulnerable residents are its seals, whose pools are kept below 25°C to prevent overheating.

According to zoological supervisor Yitzhak Yadid, maintaining cool water temperatures is essential for their wellbeing as Italy experiences prolonged periods of intense summer heat.

The Italian Ministry of Health has issued its highest-level heat warning as scorching temperatures continue to affect much of the country.

Rome is expected to see daytime highs between 36°C and 37°C, prompting authorities and animal care facilities to take additional precautions against heat-related risks.

Cooling Measures Support Animal Welfare

Zoo officials say the cooling strategies do more than simply combat the heat.

Frozen treats, water features, and climate-controlled spaces help reduce stress, keep animals physically active, and stimulate natural behaviours, improving their overall welfare while helping them cope with increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves.
