Mountain lion attacks on humans are extremely rare in California, but officials in Lassen County say recent encounters have become too close for comfort. After months of unusual sightings and risky behavior from the big cats, local authorities have declared the animals an “imminent threat to public safety.”
Residents in the rural Gold Run area say the mountain lions are becoming more comfortable near homes, pets, and people than ever before.
Sightings Started Increasing Last Summer
According to local officials, reports of mountain lion activity began rising during the summer months. Families living on large rural properties started noticing the animals appearing more often around homes and yards.
Many residents said the encounters felt different from past sightings because the animals seemed less afraid of humans.
Residents Say Lions Are No Longer Easily Scared Away
One homeowner reported that mountain lions that once fled after loud noises or lights were now staying nearby. At one point, a lion reportedly crawled underneath the resident’s deck.
Officials believe the same group or pride of lions may be responsible for multiple sightings across the area.
Close Encounters Are Worrying Families
In one incident last October, a resident said a mountain lion came within 15 feet of him while he walked his dogs. More recently, another family captured footage showing several mountain lions crossing directly near their home entrance.
The videos and reports quickly raised concerns among residents about safety, especially for children and pets.
Authorities Found Tracks Around Homes
After reviewing one of the reports, the county sheriff visited the property and discovered tracks and trails surrounding the home and nearby creek areas.
Officials said there were no obvious food sources or attractants drawing the animals in. The lions also appeared unaffected by outdoor lights, security cameras, and other deterrents.
Mountain Lion Attacks Remain Rare
Despite growing concern, wildlife experts stress that mountain lion attacks on humans remain very uncommon in California. State officials have confirmed fewer than 30 attacks since 1890, with only a small number proving fatal.
Most mountain lions naturally avoid people and prefer isolated wilderness areas away from human activity.
Why Lions May Be Moving Closer to Neighborhoods
Experts say habitat loss, drought conditions, reduced prey availability, and expanding human development can sometimes push mountain lions closer to residential areas.
Young lions searching for territory may also wander into unfamiliar places while looking for food or shelter.
Officials Urge Residents To Stay Alert
Authorities are encouraging residents to remain cautious, especially during early morning and evening hours when mountain lions are most active.
People are also advised to keep pets indoors when possible, secure outdoor spaces, and avoid approaching or cornering wildlife if sightings occur.
