Foil Surfer Knocked Into Water by Surfacing Gray Whales

JakeJune 12, 2026June 12, 2026

An ordinary evening foiling session off the coast of California turned into an unforgettable wildlife encounter when a mother gray whale and her calf suddenly surfaced just feet away from a surfer. The dramatic moment, captured on a GoPro camera, shows how quickly humans and marine wildlife can find themselves sharing the same stretch of ocean.

A Routine Ocean Session Took an Unexpected Turn

Tavis Boise was downwind foiling near Santa Barbara on May 26 when he noticed unusual activity in the water. Initially, a large sea lion feeding on a fish caught his attention, but moments later something even more remarkable emerged from the ocean beside him.

Boise later described seeing what looked like a piece of land rising from the water before realizing it was a gray whale surfacing nearby.

GoPro footage captured the incredible moment a mother gray whale and her calf surfaced directly alongside Boise’s board. The whales emerged so close that there was little time for him to react.

As the mother whale flicked her powerful tail, the turbulence created by the movement knocked Boise off his foil board and into the water.

The Encounter Ended With Laughter

Despite the surprise, the incident ended safely for both the surfer and the whales. After resurfacing, Boise could be heard laughing and describing the experience as “absolutely nuts.”

He later explained that the entire encounter happened so quickly that he had no chance to prepare for it, adding that the whales appeared to be moving rapidly along the coastline.

Gray Whale Mothers Often Stay Near Shore

The sighting occurred during a time when gray whale mothers and calves frequently travel through the Santa Barbara Channel. Each year, thousands of Pacific gray whales migrate along the California coast, with many mothers remaining close to shore while guiding their young calves northward.

This migration route overlaps with popular recreational areas used by surfers, paddlers, boaters, and foilers.

Close Encounters Are Not Always Aggressive

Wildlife experts note that encounters like this do not necessarily indicate aggressive behavior. Marine mammals can surface unexpectedly, especially in busy coastal waters where people and animals occupy the same environment.

In this case, Boise believed the calf appeared curious while the mother seemed focused on staying close to her young.
