What to Do If You Spot an Opossum on Your Deck

Opossums are often misunderstood animals that can appear unexpectedly in residential areas, especially at night. While their presence might be surprising or even unsettling for some homeowners, they are generally harmless and play an important role in controlling pests. If you ever find one on your deck, there are simple and safe ways to handle the situation without causing harm to the animal or yourself.

Stay Calm and Observe from a Distance

The first and most important step is to avoid panic. Opossums are not aggressive animals and will usually try to avoid confrontation. If you see one on your deck, keep your distance and observe its behavior quietly. Most of the time, it is just passing through or searching for food.

Do Not Try to Touch or Chase It

Even though opossums look slow and harmless, you should never attempt to touch or chase them. Like any wild animal, they can become stressed if threatened. Instead, allow it space to leave on its own. In many cases, it will move away without any interference.

Remove Food Sources Around Your Deck

Opossums are attracted to easy food sources such as pet food, garbage, fallen fruit, or unsecured compost bins. Cleaning up these attractants can help prevent future visits. Make sure trash bins are tightly sealed and outdoor feeding areas are cleaned after use.

Keep Pets Indoors or Supervised

If you have cats or dogs, it’s best to keep them indoors or closely supervised when an opossum is nearby. While opossums are not typically dangerous, any unexpected interaction between animals can lead to stress or minor injury.

Encourage It to Move Away Naturally

If the opossum does not leave on its own, you can gently encourage it by turning on outdoor lights or making light noise from inside your home. Avoid using loud or aggressive methods, as this may cause unnecessary stress to the animal.

Understand Their Role in Nature

Opossums are beneficial creatures that help control pests like insects, snails, and even ticks. They are nature’s cleanup crew and contribute to a healthier backyard ecosystem. Seeing one is often a sign of a balanced environment.

Know When to Call Wildlife Experts

If an opossum appears injured, trapped, or unusually aggressive, it may be necessary to contact local wildlife control or animal rescue services. They can safely handle the situation and ensure the animal is cared for properly.

Opossums may look unusual, but they are generally peaceful visitors. With a calm approach and simple precautions, you can safely manage their presence while respecting their role in nature.
