Michael Jackson’s Chimp Bubbles: Where He Is Now in 2026

JakeMay 24, 2026May 24, 2026

Michael Jackson’s famous chimpanzee, Bubbles, once lived at the center of global pop culture attention. Today, decades after his time in the spotlight, he is living a much quieter life in an animal sanctuary in Florida, far from the cameras and touring days.

The story of Bubbles continues to draw interest because it reflects both changing attitudes toward exotic pets and how animals once tied to fame are now being cared for differently.

Bubbles was adopted by Michael Jackson in the 1980s after being rescued from a research facility in Texas. He quickly became part of Jackson’s daily life and was often seen accompanying him during visits and public appearances.

At one point, Bubbles even traveled with Jackson and lived at the famous Neverland Ranch.

During his time at Neverland, Bubbles lived in a highly unusual environment for a chimpanzee. Reports say he slept in Jackson’s home and spent time interacting closely with the singer.

As he grew older and stronger, concerns increased about safety and animal welfare, leading to changes in his care arrangements.

Eventually, Bubbles was moved away from Jackson’s household and placed with professional animal caretakers. He spent time with trainers before being relocated to a sanctuary environment.

Since 2005, he has lived at the Center for Great Apes in Florida, a facility dedicated to the long-term care of rescued primates.

Now in his 40s, Bubbles is considered an elderly chimpanzee. He spends most of his time resting, socializing with other chimpanzees, and enjoying a calm daily routine.

Caretakers say he prefers simple activities and enjoys interacting with enrichment objects like bags and toys.

Living With Other Chimpanzees

At the sanctuary, Bubbles lives in a group environment with other chimpanzees. He has formed bonds with other primates, including older companions and younger individuals introduced into the group.

Experts say this social structure is important for chimpanzee well-being, as they naturally live in communities in the wild.

Changing Views on Exotic Pets

Bubbles’ story highlights how public attitudes toward keeping primates as pets have changed over time. Animal welfare groups now strongly discourage keeping chimpanzees in private homes due to their complex needs.

Modern conservation efforts emphasize sanctuary care instead of domestic ownership.

Even decades later, Bubbles remains a widely recognized figure because of his connection to Michael Jackson. His story is often used in discussions about animal welfare, entertainment history, and ethical treatment of primates.

Today, he lives a quiet life away from fame, representing a very different chapter from his early years in the spotlight.
