Grandfather Recovering After Yellowstone Bison Attack Says Animal ‘Could Have Killed Me, But Didn’t’

A frightening encounter at Yellowstone National Park turned into a remarkable survival story after a bison launched a grandfather into the air during an unexpected attack. Despite suffering serious injuries, the man says the massive animal showed restraint and believes the outcome could have been far worse.

The incident has renewed conversations about wildlife safety in national parks, especially during the bison breeding season when the animals can become highly aggressive.

Carl McDaniel, 65, was walking with his grandson through Yellowstone’s Bridge Bay Campground when they encountered an agitated bull bison. Witnesses said the animal had already displayed aggressive behavior toward other campers earlier that evening.

Realizing the danger, McDaniel instructed his grandson to run in one direction while he moved in another, hoping to draw the animal’s attention away from the child.

The charging bison caught up with McDaniel and used one of its horns to lift and throw him several feet into the air. The violent impact left him with a broken femur near his hip, requiring emergency surgery.

Fortunately, despite standing over the injured man after the attack, the bison did not continue its assault, allowing bystanders time to intervene.

Photographer Mike MacLeod, who witnessed the incident, rushed toward the bison while waving his arms and shouting to distract the animal. Other campers joined in, eventually encouraging the bull to retreat.

Emergency responders soon arrived, while a nurse and several bystanders provided first aid and comfort until McDaniel could be transported to a hospital.

While recovering from surgery, McDaniel reflected on the encounter and said the bison had every opportunity to cause fatal injuries but chose not to continue attacking him.

He also credited his quick decision to separate from his grandson with helping keep the child safe, expressing relief that his family escaped an even greater tragedy.

Yellowstone officials regularly remind visitors that bison are wild animals capable of running faster than humans and can become especially unpredictable during mating season.

Experts recommend staying at least 25 yards away from bison and never approaching them for photographs, regardless of how calm they may appear.
