Florida Temporarily Bans Sloth Imports After Dozens of Mysterious Deaths

A growing animal welfare controversy in Florida has sparked outrage after dozens of imported sloths reportedly died while connected to a canceled attraction called Sloth World. The shocking deaths pushed state wildlife officials to temporarily halt all sloth imports while investigations continue.

The case has raised serious concerns about exotic animal trade, captivity conditions, and whether vulnerable species are being properly protected.

Wildlife records and veterinary reports indicate that at least 55 sloths connected to the attraction died between late 2024 and 2026.

Many reportedly died either during transport or shortly after arriving in Florida, alarming veterinarians and conservation experts.

Several surviving sloths were transferred to Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens for emergency medical care.

Zoo staff described the animals as severely weakened, with some requiring intensive around-the-clock treatment to stay alive.

Experts Believe Stress Played a Major Role

Necropsy reports showed viral infections and severe physical decline in some sloths. However, experts believe deeper problems may have contributed to the deaths.

Poor nutrition, transport stress, overcrowding, and improper care conditions may have weakened the animals’ immune systems over time.

Unlike many exotic species, sloths are highly specialized animals adapted to slow movement, stable climates, and low-stress environments.

Even small changes in temperature, diet, or handling can seriously affect their health in captivity.

Florida Responded With a Temporary Ban

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued a 60-day emergency ban on sloth imports while officials review regulations.

The order also requires current sloth permit holders to report severe illness cases to state wildlife authorities.

Recordkeeping Problems Raised More Questions

Researchers reviewing import documents noticed inconsistencies involving the number of sloths brought into the state.

Some experts fear the total number of deaths may be even higher due to possible gaps in tracking and reporting.

Wildlife Experts Want Stronger Laws

Conservation groups and sloth researchers are now pushing for stricter animal welfare protections nationwide.

They argue that current regulations fail to properly monitor exotic animal transport, health conditions, and long-term captive care.

The controversy has renewed debate about whether sensitive wildlife species should be used in entertainment attractions at all.

For many conservationists, the tragedy highlights how difficult it can be to safely care for exotic animals outside their natural habitats.
