An Alaska woman was seriously injured after confronting a brown bear near her home while trying to protect one of her dogs. The frightening encounter unfolded in the early morning hours when the woman unexpectedly came across a mother bear and her cubs just outside her house.

According to investigators, the woman stepped outside her home in Kenai, Alaska, with her two dogs shortly before 5 a.m. when she encountered a brown bear accompanied by two cubs.

One dog safely ran back inside the house, but the other fled into the front yard.

Concerned for her dog, the woman retrieved a shotgun from inside the home before returning outside.

Authorities said she fired several rounds into the air or nearby in an attempt to frighten the bears and encourage them to leave the property.

Instead of retreating, the adult bear charged toward the woman while she was standing on her front deck.

Another person inside the home rushed outside and shouted at the bear, causing it to flee the area with its cubs.

Wildlife experts note that female brown bears are particularly protective when accompanied by cubs. If they perceive a threat to their young, they may react aggressively, especially during close-range encounters around homes or campsites.

Residents in bear country are encouraged to remain alert, secure attractants such as garbage and pet food, keep dogs under control, and avoid approaching bears whenever possible.
