Aggressive Black Bear Tears Into Wyoming Campsite Despite Campers Following Safety Rules

A frightening overnight encounter in Wyoming’s Bighorn National Forest has renewed concerns about bears that become comfortable around humans. Two campers were forced to flee after a black bear repeatedly attacked their campsite, ignoring barking dogs, warning shots, and loud noises.

Wildlife experts say the incident is highly unusual and could indicate the bear had previously learned to associate campsites with food. They warn that such behavior can make future encounters even more dangerous.

On July 5, campers Shonna Dehl and Maggie Bassett were sleeping near Fool Creek in Bighorn National Forest when a black bear tore into one of their tents.

The women said they had removed all food, drinks, and scented items from their sleeping area, yet the bear focused directly on the tents instead of searching for food.

Dogs and Warning Shots Failed to Scare the Bear

The campers’ four dogs barked continuously as the bear refused to back away from the campsite.

After firing warning shots, the women managed to reach their vehicles, where they repeatedly honked their horns before finally leaving the area for their safety.

When the campers returned the following morning, they found their campsite heavily damaged.

According to Dehl, the bear had completely destroyed the tents after they evacuated, despite there being no food left behind.

Wildlife Expert Says the Bear Shows Dangerous Behavior

Chris Servheen, former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grizzly bear recovery coordinator, described the bear’s behavior as unusually aggressive.

He believes the animal has likely become accustomed to human campsites and warned that such bears often repeat the same behavior unless wildlife officials intervene.

Proper Bear Safety Still Matters

Experts say the women appeared to follow recommended bear-safety practices by storing food properly and leaving the area once the bear became aggressive.

They also stress that campers who properly secure food and scented items help prevent bears from learning dangerous habits that can threaten future visitors.
