An 11-year-old boy from Pennsylvania is recovering after a devastating alligator attack during a family vacation in Florida. The incident occurred while he was fishing with his father, who instinctively rushed in to save him from being dragged into the water.
A Fishing Trip Turns Tragic
On June 27, Brodie Dituri was fishing with his family at Nelson Fish Camp near Umatilla, Florida.
After catching a fish, he was releasing it back into the water when an alligator suddenly lunged and grabbed his hand.
Father’s Split-Second Decision
Brodie’s father, Peter Dituri, immediately jumped onto the alligator in an attempt to free his son.
Authorities later told him that his actions may have prevented the reptile from pulling Brodie into the water before performing its powerful “death roll.” During the struggle, however, the alligator’s movement resulted in Brodie’s hand being severed.
Emergency Treatment and Recovery
Brodie was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors performed several surgeries in an effort to save his hand.
Despite their efforts, the damage was too severe, and his hand had to be amputated at the wrist. Wildlife officials later located and euthanized the 8-foot-7-inch alligator involved in the attack.
Looking Ahead After the Trauma
As Brodie continues his recovery, his family is exploring prosthetic options and other long-term rehabilitation plans.
According to his father, Brodie is currently leaning toward using a prosthetic hand as he works to adapt to everyday life.
A Lasting Impact
The family had regularly vacationed in Florida before the attack, but the experience has dramatically changed Brodie’s feelings about returning.
His loved ones say he hopes to continue enjoying activities such as fishing, baseball, and football as he adjusts to life after the injury.
