In 2005, three wild lions in Ethiopia reportedly chased away a group of men who had abducted a 12-year-old girl. According to police and wildlife officials, the lions remained near the girl until authorities arrived, then quietly walked away without harming her. Experts suggested the girl’s cries may have triggered the lions’ protective instincts, though the exact reason remains unknown.
Binti Jua the Gorilla Protected a Young Boy
One of the most famous examples occurred in 1996 at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo. After a 3-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure and lost consciousness, an 8-year-old western lowland gorilla named Binti Jua gently picked him up while carrying her own infant. She carefully carried the child to an access door, allowing zookeepers to retrieve him safely.
Jambo the Silverback Stood Guard
Ten years earlier, another gorilla made headlines at Jersey Zoo. When a young boy fell into the enclosure, the dominant silverback, Jambo, approached the unconscious child but did not attack. Instead, he stood nearby and appeared to keep the rest of the gorilla troop away until keepers were able to rescue the boy.
Dolphins Formed a Protective Circle Around Swimmers
In 2004, lifeguard Rob Howes and his family were swimming off the coast of New Zealand when a pod of bottlenose dolphins suddenly surrounded them. The dolphins repeatedly circled the swimmers, preventing them from moving away. Moments later, a great white shark was spotted nearby. Many researchers believe the dolphins’ behavior may have discouraged the shark from approaching.
A Dolphin Helped Keep a Teenager Afloat
Off the coast of Italy, a wild dolphin known locally as Filippo reportedly came to the aid of a 14-year-old boy who had fallen from a boat. Witnesses said the dolphin supported the struggling teenager near the surface until his father noticed what was happening and pulled him back aboard.
Why Do These Encounters Happen?
Scientists caution that these extraordinary events should not be interpreted as evidence that wild animals intentionally rescue humans. In many cases, the behavior may be explained by curiosity, protective instincts, social behavior, or reactions to distress.
