A female Steller sea lion has been rescued after becoming trapped in a plastic ring near Nevelsk on Russia’s Sakhalin Island.
The protected animal was spotted resting on a breakwater with the ring wrapped tightly around her neck. Rescuers said the plastic had already cut deeply into her flesh and could have caused even more serious harm if it had not been removed.
Sea Lion Found Tangled Near Port
The sea lion was seen near the port town of Nevelsk, where large numbers of Steller sea lions often gather. The area is known as one of the rare places where the animals regularly come together so close to a town port.
Photos from the rescue showed the injured sea lion lying among other sea lions on the breakwater rocks. A rescue boat carrying specialists then approached the site.
The plastic ring around her neck had become dangerously tight. As the animal grew or moved, the ring had dug into her skin, leaving a severe wound.
For marine animals, this kind of entanglement can become life-threatening. Plastic debris can restrict movement, cause infection, and slowly worsen over time.
Rescuers Used Remote Anesthesia
The rescue required careful planning because Steller sea lions are large, powerful animals. Getting close to one on uneven rocks can be dangerous for both the animal and the rescue team.
For the first time in this operation, environmentalists were allowed to use remote anesthesia. Medication was provided with support from the regional Ministry of Health.
The rescue group “Friends of the Ocean” approached the breakwater by boat and used a dart to sedate the animal. This allowed the team to safely reach her without causing unnecessary panic.
Once the sea lion was subdued, rescuers moved carefully across the rocks and removed the plastic ring from her neck.
A Wound That Could Have Worsened
The ring had left a deep injury, showing how long the sea lion may have been trapped. Rescuers feared the wound would continue to worsen if the plastic remained in place.
After removing the ring, the team gave the animal another medication to reverse the anesthesia. They then monitored her until she regained consciousness.
The successful rescue ended what could have become a fatal situation. Without intervention, the injury may have led to infection, further tissue damage, or difficulty feeding and moving.
For the rescue team, removing the plastic was only one part of the operation. Making sure the sea lion safely woke up was just as important.
Nevelsk Is a Sea Lion Gathering Spot
Nevelsk, located on the southwest coast of Sakhalin Island, is an important gathering place for Steller sea lions. Hundreds of the animals can sometimes be seen packed together near the port.
This close contact with a human-dominated area creates unusual opportunities for people to observe the species. But it also brings risks.
Marine debris, fishing gear, and plastic waste can easily enter the animals’ environment. Once debris becomes wrapped around an animal, it may be impossible for the animal to remove it alone.
The rescue highlights both the importance and the vulnerability of this rare gathering site.
Plastic Pollution Remains a Serious Threat
The sea lion’s injury is a reminder of how dangerous plastic pollution can be for marine wildlife. Rings, ropes, nets, packaging, and other debris can trap animals for weeks, months, or longer.
Marine mammals are especially vulnerable because they swim, dive, and rest in areas where floating or discarded materials collect.
Even a small plastic loop can become deadly as it tightens around a growing animal’s body. What begins as litter can turn into a slow and painful threat.
For conservationists, the rescue is a success story. But it also shows why preventing plastic debris from reaching the ocean remains essential.
