The Tragic Story of Banff’s Most Famous Bear: Nakoda the White Grizzly

JakeJuly 18, 2026July 17, 2026

Nakoda, the striking white grizzly bear of Banff National Park, captured the hearts of wildlife enthusiasts around the world. With her pale cream-colored fur and distinctive dark stripe along her back, she became one of the park’s most recognizable residents. Sadly, her remarkable story ended in tragedy, highlighting the ongoing challenges of protecting wildlife living alongside busy highways.

Nakoda first gained attention in 2020 when visitors spotted her near Lake Louise in Banff National Park. Her unusually light-colored coat made her stand out from other grizzly bears, drawing photographers and tourists from across the globe.

Despite her popularity, frequent human attention caused Nakoda to become increasingly comfortable around vehicles. She was often seen foraging for dandelions along the roadside while crowds stopped to watch and photograph her.

Nakoda’s White Fur Was Caused by Leucism

Although many assumed Nakoda was an albino bear, her unique appearance was actually caused by leucism. This rare genetic condition reduces pigmentation in an animal’s fur while leaving the eyes and nose their normal color.

Unlike albinism, leucism does not affect vision or overall health. However, lighter fur can make camouflage more difficult in natural habitats, potentially increasing risks for wild animals.

A Family History Marked by Highway Tragedies

Nakoda had been living near roads since she was a cub. Alongside her mother and sister, she frequently wandered close to the Trans-Canada Highway in search of food growing beside the roadway.

Sadly, both her mother and sister were eventually killed in separate vehicle collisions. These heartbreaking losses highlighted the dangers highways pose to wildlife, especially bears attracted to roadside vegetation.

Efforts to Keep Nakoda Away Were Unsuccessful

Wildlife officials tried several methods to discourage Nakoda from returning to the highway. Traditional fencing was installed, but the intelligent bear quickly learned how to climb over it to reach the dandelions she loved.

Authorities later relocated her multiple times within her home range, yet she repeatedly found her way back. Electric fencing briefly appeared to work, but Nakoda eventually returned to the roadside once again.

In June 2024, tragedy struck when Nakoda’s two cubs wandered onto the Trans-Canada Highway and were killed by passing vehicles. The devastating event left Nakoda lingering near the area where the accident occurred.

Later that same day, a passing train startled the grieving bear. She ran onto the highway, where she was struck by a vehicle. Although she initially escaped into nearby forest, internal injuries proved fatal, and wildlife officials confirmed her death two days later.
