Bison Launches Grandfather Into the Air During Yellowstone Attack Caught on Camera

JakeJuly 15, 2026July 15, 2026

A peaceful visit to Yellowstone National Park turned terrifying when a bison bull charged at a grandfather, tossing him nearly eight feet into the air. The frightening incident, captured on camera by a nearby photographer, highlights how quickly wildlife encounters can become dangerous—even when visitors appear to keep their distance.

The attack left the man with serious injuries and serves as another reminder that Yellowstone’s iconic bison are powerful wild animals that should never be underestimated.

The incident occurred at Bridge Bay Campground near Yellowstone Lake, where professional photographer Mike MacLeod was camping. He recorded the dramatic moments as a large bison suddenly became agitated near a roadway.

The grandfather and his grandson had stopped to take photos when the animal shifted its attention toward them. What began as a calm wildlife sighting escalated into a life-threatening encounter within seconds.

As the bison charged, the grandson managed to escape behind nearby trees. The grandfather attempted to get away, but the massive animal caught up with him.

Using its sharp horns, the estimated 2,000-pound bull lifted the man into the air before throwing him violently to the ground. Witnesses said the bison continued displaying aggressive behavior even after the victim landed.

Photographer Mike MacLeod and several nearby campers quickly intervened to distract and scare the bison away from the injured man. Others immediately contacted emergency services and provided assistance until help arrived.

The victim, later identified as Carl McDaniel from Washington state, reportedly suffered a broken hip and significant pain in his leg and pelvis. Witnesses feared the situation could have ended much worse.

According to MacLeod, the same bison had been charging at other visitors, including children, shortly before attacking the grandfather. He described the animal as visibly agitated and reacting aggressively to nearly everything around it.

The witness also noted that the grandfather and his grandson did not appear to provoke the animal and had maintained a reasonable distance before the unexpected charge occurred.

Why Yellowstone Visitors Must Respect Wildlife

Yellowstone’s bison are among the last free-ranging herds that have existed continuously since prehistoric times. Adult bulls can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and are capable of running much faster than humans.

Park officials consistently remind visitors to stay well away from bison and all wildlife. Even animals that appear calm can become defensive or aggressive without warning, making proper viewing distance essential for everyone’s safety.
