These Animals Kill More Livestock Than Wolves in Surprising Numbers

Wolves are often blamed whenever livestock disappear, but in many regions they are far from the biggest threat to farmers and ranchers. Across the United States, several other animals quietly cause far more damage to cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry every year.

From stealthy predators that attack under cover of darkness to scavengers that overwhelm weakened animals, these species are responsible for massive agricultural losses that many people rarely hear about.

Coyotes Cause Massive Livestock Losses

Coyotes are among the most destructive livestock predators in North America. Their adaptability allows them to thrive almost everywhere, from open ranchland to suburban edges.

They frequently target sheep, goats, calves, and poultry, often hunting alone or in pairs. Because coyotes reproduce quickly and spread into new territories easily, controlling their populations remains extremely difficult for ranchers.

Feral hogs are considered one of the most damaging invasive species in America. These powerful animals tear through crops, destroy fences, contaminate water sources, and sometimes kill newborn livestock.

Large groups can overrun farmland rapidly, leaving behind enormous destruction in a single night. Their expanding populations across the southern United States continue to create major problems for agriculture.

Domestic Dogs Can Be Unexpected Predators

Loose or abandoned domestic dogs are responsible for more livestock deaths than many wild predators in certain areas.

Unlike wolves, which usually kill for food, dogs sometimes attack animals out of instinct or excitement. Entire flocks of sheep or chickens can be killed during chaotic attacks even when very little is eaten afterward.

Mountain Lions Target Larger Farm Animals

Mountain lions are stealth hunters capable of taking down calves, goats, and even full grown deer-sized animals.

Although attacks are less common than coyote incidents, the damage from a single mountain lion encounter can be severe. These predators often stalk livestock near wooded areas or mountain terrain where natural prey is limited.

Bears Can Devastate Ranches Quickly

Black bears and grizzly bears occasionally raid farms in search of easy meals. Beehives, livestock feed, poultry, and young animals are common targets.

Because bears are extremely powerful, even protective fencing may not stop determined individuals from entering ranch property once they identify a reliable food source.

Birds of Prey Also Threaten Small Livestock

Large raptors such as eagles, hawks, and owls can pose dangers to chickens, ducks, rabbits, and newborn lambs.

While they rarely target larger livestock, these aerial hunters can still cause major losses for small farms, especially in rural areas where animals remain exposed in open fields.
