A swimmer was hospitalized after suffering a serious foot injury in a suspected shark bite at Jones Beach State Park on Friday, becoming the first reported shark-related incident at the beach this summer.

The attack happened as thousands of visitors packed the shoreline to escape soaring temperatures and watch the U.S. Navy Blue Angels practice ahead of the Fourth of July air show.

The incident occurred around noon near Field 6 at Jones Beach.

According to lifeguards, the injured swimmer ran to a nearby lifeguard stand with a bleeding foot, repeatedly saying he had been bitten and did not want to look at the injury.

Lifeguards who treated the victim said the injury consisted of a deep gash across the toes that exposed bone.

They quickly applied first aid and controlled the bleeding before emergency responders transported the swimmer to a local hospital. Officials expect him to make a full recovery.

Although the swimmer never saw what bit him, another beachgoer reportedly spotted a fin moving away moments after the incident.

Based on the wound pattern, lifeguards believe the injury may have been caused by a juvenile sand tiger shark, though officials have not confirmed the species.

The incident comes just one day after multiple shark sightings temporarily closed sections of nearby Rockaway Beach.

Authorities also reported a nine-foot shark near Point Lookout, highlighting increased shark activity along parts of the New York coastline during the busy summer season.
