A routine animal rescue in Florida turned into an unexpected wildlife operation after firefighters discovered the struggling “dog” they pulled from a canal was actually a young coyote. The surprising rescue highlighted the quick thinking of first responders and local residents who worked together to save the exhausted animal.
A Rescue Call with an Unexpected Twist
Firefighters from the Cape Coral Fire Department responded to reports of a dog trapped in a canal at Britannia Lake on June 22. When crews arrived, the frightened animal repeatedly swam from one side of the canal to the other, making the rescue more challenging.
The exhausted animal eventually crawled beneath a dock, where firefighters carefully entered the water to reach it. Once safely removed, rescuers realized they had not rescued a dog at all, but a young coyote pup.
Community Members Played a Key Role
A kayaker named Denae Judd happened to be nearby when the incident unfolded and volunteered to help. She kept track of the animal’s movements in the water and alerted firefighters when it hid beneath the dock.
Another resident, Brian, reportedly witnessed the coyote fall into the canal and even jumped into the water in an attempt to save it before emergency crews arrived. Both residents were later recognized by the fire department for their efforts.
Safe Capture and Medical Care
After retrieving the coyote from beneath the dock, firefighters determined it was too exhausted to be released immediately. The pup was carefully secured and wrapped in a blanket to help it recover from the ordeal.
The animal was then transported to East West Veterinary Care Center, where veterinarians coordinated its transfer to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) for rehabilitation and future release if possible.
A Reminder That Wildlife Can Be Misidentified
Young coyotes can closely resemble domestic dogs, especially when viewed from a distance or under stressful circumstances. Their similar appearance can easily lead to mistaken identity during emergency situations.
Fortunately, firefighters approached the rescue with care regardless of the animal’s species. Their priority remained safely removing the distressed animal while minimizing stress and preventing injury.
Wildlife Rescues Require Teamwork
Although the circumstances were unusual, the rescue demonstrated how cooperation between emergency responders and members of the public can lead to successful outcomes. Quick reporting and calm assistance helped bring the operation to a safe conclusion.
Officials have not determined how the coyote pup ended up in the canal or whether other members of its family were nearby. Thanks to the combined efforts of firefighters, veterinarians, and wildlife rehabilitators, the young coyote now has a chance to recover and eventually return to the wild.
