Brittany Clark, 31, was fatally attacked while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River at Little Big Econ State Forest with her boyfriend, Chance Allison, and their roommate on Sunday.
According to officials, Clark’s boyfriend attempted to pull her from the jaws of a large alligator during the attack, but despite desperate efforts, she did not survive.
Family Speaks Out After Devastating Loss
Clark’s father, Robert Clark, said the tragedy came just days after the family had already suffered another personal loss with the passing of his mother.
Remembering his daughter, he described Brittany as an adventurous, hardworking woman who loved motorcycles, hiking, nature, and spending time outdoors. She worked in construction, operating heavy machinery, and had been looking forward to building a future with her boyfriend.
Calls for Greater Public Awareness
Following the incident, Robert Clark urged wildlife authorities to strengthen safety measures around waterways where large alligators are known to live.
He believes clearer warning signs, increased public awareness, and better management of nuisance alligators could help prevent similar tragedies.
Officials Respond
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said serious alligator attacks remain rare but acknowledged the incident.
Authorities captured and removed two alligators following the attack, including a 13-foot alligator found near the location where Clark was attacked.
The agency noted that it operates the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP), which responds to reports of alligators considered a threat to people, pets, or property.
According to FWC data, Florida recorded 500 unprovoked alligator bites between 1948 and 2025, with 32 resulting in fatalities.
