A private visit to the Los Angeles Zoo involving a Komodo dragon enclosure took a dangerous turn when journalist Phil Bronstein suffered a serious injury after an unexpected encounter with the large reptile. The incident required medical treatment and later surgery.

In June 2001, actress Sharon Stone arranged a private tour of the Los Angeles Zoo for her then-husband, journalist Phil Bronstein. The visit included rare access to restricted animal areas not typically open to the public.

Among the highlights of the tour was an opportunity to view a Komodo dragon enclosure up close. The experience was intended as an educational and memorable moment during the private visit.

Before Bronstein entered the enclosure, a zookeeper reportedly advised him to remove his white shoes. Staff were concerned that the color could potentially attract the attention of the Komodo dragon.

Although the precaution was taken to reduce risk, it also meant Bronstein entered the area with exposed feet. This placed him closer to the animal than is typical for zoo visitors.

During the interaction, the Komodo dragon suddenly bit Bronstein’s foot. The animal’s powerful jaws caused significant injury, including damage to his big toe.

Komodo dragons are known for their strong bite force and serrated teeth, which can cause deep tissue injuries. The incident escalated quickly before staff were able to intervene.

Bronstein sustained serious injuries that required emergency medical attention. He later underwent reconstructive surgery to repair damaged tendons and tissue in his foot.

Doctors at UCLA Medical Center treated the injuries and worked to restore function. His recovery involved a lengthy healing process following the incident.

Years later, Sharon Stone spoke about the event and described the severity of her husband’s injury. She recalled that the damage to his toe was extremely serious and required urgent care.

Her comments highlighted how quickly the situation changed from a routine zoo visit to a medical emergency. The experience remained a memorable and difficult moment for the family.

Komodo dragons are among the largest lizards in the world and are known for their strength and predatory instincts. While incidents involving humans are rare, they are capable of causing serious injury if provoked or closely approached.

Zoos that house Komodo dragons follow strict safety protocols to protect both visitors and animals. The incident is often referenced as an example of why controlled environments still require careful supervision.
