A routine hike in Colorado turned into a terrifying ordeal when a woman reported being followed by a black bear for nearly 30 minutes. Despite yelling, throwing rocks, and trying to scare it away, the bear allegedly continued circling and trailing her until other hikers stepped in to help.
Wildlife officials say the behavior is highly unusual and are investigating whether the bear had become too comfortable around people. The incident has prompted renewed warnings about staying safe in bear country.
Hiker Describes Frightening 30-Minute Encounter
The incident occurred Sunday evening on the Enchanted Forest Trail in Apex Park near Golden, Colorado. The woman said the bear approached from behind and scratched her leg during the encounter.
Instead of fleeing, the animal reportedly stayed close for nearly half an hour. The hiker tried to scare it away by yelling loudly and throwing rocks, but the bear continued following her.
Bear Refused to Leave Despite Repeated Hazing Attempts
According to the hiker, the bear repeatedly circled her and ignored multiple attempts to drive it away. Such persistent behavior is uncommon for black bears, which usually avoid humans.
Wildlife officials reviewed cellphone footage captured during the encounter. They believe the bear may have been a smaller animal, possibly a yearling or young adult.
Other Hikers Helped Drive the Bear Away
Two hikers eventually came across the woman and joined her efforts to frighten the bear. Together, they shouted until the animal finally retreated from the area.
Even after leaving the group, the bear reportedly began following other hikers nearby. The reports prompted officials to temporarily close the park while they investigated.
Wildlife Officials Suspect a Food-Conditioned Bear
Colorado Parks and Wildlife does not currently believe the bear was acting as a predator. Instead, officials suspect it may have become food-conditioned after associating people with easy food sources.
Bears that gain access to garbage, pet food, or human snacks can lose their natural fear of people. This often increases the likelihood of dangerous encounters.
Investigation Underway as Park Temporarily Closes
Wildlife officers are searching for the bear to determine whether this was an isolated incident or part of a broader pattern of unusual behavior. They also want to assess whether the animal is sick or malnourished.
If officials determine the bear poses an ongoing threat to public safety, management actions could include relocating or euthanizing the animal. The investigation remains ongoing.
