A tragic search for a missing South African man ended with a grim discovery after authorities found human remains inside a massive crocodile along the Komati River. DNA testing later confirmed the remains belonged to 59-year-old Gabriel Batista, who disappeared during severe flooding.
The shocking case has also raised new questions after investigators reportedly found several pairs of shoes inside the crocodile. Police are now examining whether the discovery could be linked to other unresolved missing-person cases.
Floodwaters Swept the Man Into the River
Gabriel Batista disappeared after his vehicle became stranded at a flooded river crossing. Rising waters swept his truck downstream, forcing him into the crocodile-filled Komati River.
Rescue teams searched the area for about a week. Despite extensive efforts, there was initially no sign of the missing man.
Giant Crocodile Drew Investigators’ Attention
Search crews noticed a 15-foot crocodile resting on the riverbank close to Batista’s last known location. The reptile appeared to be sunbathing, a common behavior after consuming a large meal.
Because the crocodile was found only a short distance from where Batista disappeared, authorities suspected it might have been involved in the case.
DNA Confirms the Victim’s Identity
Authorities carried out a complex operation to recover the crocodile for examination. The animal was euthanized before being airlifted to a secure location for an autopsy.
Medical experts recovered human remains from the crocodile’s stomach. DNA analysis later confirmed the remains belonged to Gabriel Batista.
Investigators Examine Additional Evidence
During the examination, officials also found six pairs of shoes inside the crocodile. The unexpected discovery has prompted further investigation.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the shoes are connected to other missing-person cases. The investigation remains ongoing while forensic experts review the evidence.
