During one rescue outing, animal advocate Zuly Ventura Vasquez spotted a severely underweight dog curled tightly around a small puppy. The sight immediately stopped her in her tracks.
The mother dog was using her own body to shield the puppy from the freezing weather. Despite being dangerously thin herself, she remained focused on protecting her baby.
A Mother’s Love Refused to Give Up

Without hesitation, Vasquez contacted Houston K-911 Rescue and explained the urgent situation. The rescue organization immediately agreed to take both dogs into its care.
The mother was later named Leia, while her puppy was given the name Luke. Safe from the freezing temperatures, they finally received food, shelter, and medical attention.
Their Story Quickly Captured Hearts
Photos of Leia protecting Luke spread rapidly online after their rescue. Animal lovers across the country were deeply moved by the mother’s devotion and determination.
The viral images inspired countless people to follow their journey. Many supporters wanted to help ensure that both dogs would have a brighter future.
A New Opportunity Changes Their Lives
One rescue organization based in Colorado, Up Pup and Away, was especially touched by the story. After seeing the photos, the group offered to transport Leia and Luke to Colorado and help them find permanent homes.
Following treatment for heartworm disease and additional care, the pair made the journey to start a new chapter. For the first time, they had the chance to leave their struggles behind.

Once Luke was old enough to live independently, he and Leia moved into separate foster homes. Luke’s foster family quickly fell in love with the playful puppy and decided to adopt him.
