Orphaned Grizzly Bear Cubs Get a Second Chance After Human-Wildlife Conflict

Two orphaned grizzly bear cubs rescued from Montana have begun a new chapter at Colorado’s Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, where their adorable appearance is capturing hearts while their story highlights the growing challenges of human-wildlife conflict.

The six-month-old siblings arrived at the zoo earlier this month after a 10-hour journey and are now settling into their new home under the care of wildlife experts.

The young bears each weigh around 30 pounds and are already charming their caregivers with their fluffy ears, playful personalities, and healthy appetites.

Zoo staff say the cubs are eating well, playing together, and steadily gaining weight as they adapt to life in human care.

The pair represents a significant milestone for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

They are the youngest grizzly bears the zoo has cared for in decades and the first orphaned grizzly cubs welcomed there in more than 20 years.

Why the Cubs Needed Rescue

Wildlife officials rescued the cubs after their mother was euthanized following repeated conflicts with humans, including a confirmed livestock attack.

Without their mother, the cubs were too young to survive on their own in the wild.

Human Behavior Can Put Wildlife at Risk

Conservation experts say bears that become accustomed to people, food, or garbage often lose their natural fear of humans, increasing the likelihood of dangerous encounters.

They urge people never to feed wild animals or approach them for photos, as these seemingly harmless actions can have tragic consequences.

The cubs are currently living behind the scenes while completing quarantine and building trust with their caretakers.

Once they are ready to meet visitors, zoo officials hope they will help educate the public about wildlife conservation and the importance of preventing human-bear conflicts.
