A woman believed she was bringing home the perfect puppy after responding to a breeder’s advertisement. But as the animal grew, she realized he wasn’t suited to life as an ordinary family pet.
The surprising discovery led her to make a heartbreaking decision that ultimately gave the wolf-dog a happier and healthier future.
Sold as a Wolf Hybrid Puppy

Trigger was purchased from a breeder in Oklahoma after being advertised as a wolf hybrid puppy. With his striking amber eyes and thick white coat, he quickly won over his new owner, who paid $300 to bring him home.
The breeder described Trigger as “super socialized” but also “extremely high content,” meaning he carried a high percentage of wolf genetics and closely resembled a wild wolf.
Reality Set In as He Grew

By the time Trigger was about five months old, his owner realized he was far more challenging than she expected. He chewed through part of a wall, couldn’t safely roam inside the house, and had to stay in a wire kennel while she was away.
He also began displaying dominance behaviors toward her older dog, raising concerns that future conflicts could become dangerous.
A Difficult but Loving Decision

After researching wolf-dogs, Trigger’s owner concluded that he would never thrive in a typical household. Although she loved him deeply, she recognized he needed an environment designed for animals with strong wild instincts.
She contacted the W.O.L.F. Sanctuary in Colorado, which accepted Trigger in August 2014 and gave him a permanent home.
Struggling to Find a Friend

Life at the sanctuary wasn’t immediately easy. Trigger was introduced to two different wolf-dogs, but neither formed a lasting bond with him.
Caretakers described him as a shy and gentle youngster who desperately needed companionship.
An Unexpected Friendship

Everything changed when another rescue named Spartacus arrived. The two wolf-dogs bonded instantly, spending their days wrestling, chasing each other, and sleeping side by side.
Their friendship helped both animals. Spartacus became less anxious, while Trigger gradually grew more trusting of his caregivers.
Living the Life He Needed

Today, Trigger enjoys life in a spacious enclosure alongside Spartacus, where he can express natural wolf-like behaviors in a safe environment.
His story is a reminder that wolf-dogs have unique needs that make them unsuitable for most homes, and that responsible ownership sometimes means making the difficult choice to put an animal’s welfare first.
