Located in the town of Deshnoke, the Karni Mata Temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, a revered Hindu figure believed by devotees to be an incarnation of the goddess Durga.
The temple has become internationally famous because of its enormous population of rats. Visitors often see the animals running across floors, climbing railings, gathering around food offerings, and even walking over people’s feet.
Unlike the fear or disgust rats often inspire elsewhere, these animals are welcomed and protected within the temple grounds.
Why Are the Rats Considered Sacred?
The rats, known locally as kābā, hold deep spiritual significance for followers of Karni Mata.
According to local beliefs, members of Karni Mata’s family are reincarnated as these rats after death. When the rats die, they are believed to be reborn again into the Charan community, creating a continuous cycle between human and animal life.
For devotees, the rats represent ancestors rather than ordinary rodents, which explains the extraordinary care they receive.
The Legend Behind Karni Mata
The temple’s origins are tied to a centuries-old legend involving Karni Mata and a young relative named Lakshman.
According to tradition, Lakshman drowned, and Karni Mata pleaded with Yamraj, the Hindu god of death, to restore him to life. When her request was denied, she declared that members of her family would no longer pass into the realm of death. Instead, they would return as kābā and eventually be reborn into human form.
This belief transformed the temple into a place where worshippers feel connected to both the divine and their ancestors.
A Paradise for Rats
The temple provides an environment unlike any other for black rats, one of the world’s most adaptable mammals.
The animals have access to abundant food provided daily by worshippers and visitors. Large bowls of milk, grains, sweets, and other offerings are placed throughout the temple. Predators such as cats, dogs, and birds are kept away, creating a safe haven where the rat population thrives.
Experts describe the site as a unique ecosystem where the animals have little reason to leave.
The Rare White Rats Bring Good Fortune
Among the thousands of dark-coated rats are a handful of rare white individuals. These rats are especially revered and are believed by many worshippers to represent Karni Mata herself or members of her immediate family.
Spotting a white rat is considered a sign of extraordinary luck and blessing. Visitors often become excited when one appears, gathering quickly for a glimpse of the sacred animal.
Because white rats are so rare, sightings are memorable events for both tourists and devotees.
